Golden invented cushioned, Zero Drop running shoes to marry the form improving, impact reducing benefits of barefoot running with the cushioning and support of traditional running shoes.  Golden loved the benefits of running barefoot, but also did the majority of his running on rocky, gnarly mountain terrain or over very long distances which necessitated protective footwear.
